ACA, Registered Counsellor

Steven is an expert relationship counsellor, trained in the top six approaches to couples therapy and the developer of an advanced integrated approach to working with couples. He has worked with couples for nearly 2 decades, helping them to restore loving connection and create new and lasting relationship patterns.

Steven has trained around the world under relationship experts including Harville Hendrix, John and Julia Gottman, Stan Tatkin, Maya Kollman, Bruce Crapucettes and Tammy Nelson.  He has been actively involved in promoting and linking therapeutic and brain science insights to produce more powerful and integrated connection solutions. Steven led a team of therapists in developing PORT (Presence Oriented Relationship Therapy), New Zealand’s first integrated approach to working with couples. His collaboration with other passionate international clinicians led him to be a contributor to HEART Humanistic Existential Approach to Relationship Therapy, the first evidence-based couples therapy training modality.

Steven’s approach as a relationship counsellor is to empower couples with tools to communicate effectively so that they can feel safe, loved and desired. He has a special interest in working with clients to prepare for marriage and to restore lost connection.  Steven also runs full day and multi-day intensive therapy sessions (more info).

The method Steven uses combines practical guidance and coaching in a warm and safe environment, along with teaching the ‘hows’ and ‘whys’ of building love.

Steven also works with singles who want to prepare themselves to be in committed relationships or who are recovering from past relationship hurts.

Pre-marriage preparation is another area Steven is dedicated to. He believes relationship counselling can provide a good grounding in communication and help couples avoid years of unnecessary pain and disappointment.

Steven holds a Masters in Counselling, is an Advanced Imago Clinician, has completed level 2 and 3 training in Emotionally Focussed Therapy and Gottman Method respectively, and was the Senior Clinical Instructor on the International Faculty of the Relational Path Institute, teaching the evidence-based Mindful Integrated Relationship Therapy.
